Smashing Drive | C | 2002-02-18 | Good arcade game Great level design | Repetitive soundtrack No replay value | Suffers from the same problem as most arcade ports: It's fun for about 2 hours.
18 Wheeler: American Pro Trucker | F | 2002-02-20 | Completely unfinished Terrible performance Game can be beaten in 20 minutes | Whose idea was it to port this game? I wonder how much money they actually made from this. |
Jeremy McGrath Supercross World | F | 2002-02-26 | Completely unfinished Level design completely devoid of life Terrible graphics Unintuitive trick system | A complete waste of time. One of the worst games I've ever played. |
Gauntlet Dark Legacy | A | 2002-03-05 | Great dungeon crawler 4-player co-op Great level design Levels have a lot of variety | The game is very long Lots of minor glitches Terrible performance | Absurdly long game, but it's really cool. Definitely play this with a few friends.
All-Star Baseball 2003 | B | 2002-03-07 | Good baseball simulation Intuitive controls Good stadium atmosphere | Menus and UI are dated | Like 2002, but with a few more features. It's good.
007: Agent Under Fire | B | 2002-03-12 | Smooth gameplay Good variety Fun multiplayer | Story is rushed and ends abruptly No actors from the movies Doesn't utilize the 007 IP as well as it could | Decent campaign, awesome multiplayer. The closest thing we have to Quake 3 on GameCube.
Pac-Man World 2 | A | 2002-03-12 | Great 3D Platformer Good music Graphics are colorful and charming | Boss fights are annoying and repetitive 100% completion is unfair at times | One of the better 3D Platformers on GameCube. It's Pac-Man at its best.
SpyHunter | D | 2002-03-12 | Drifting is satisfying Objectives in a driving game are interesting Good replayability Contains the Blues Brothers theme song | FMV Cutscenes are really blurry No texture filtering (Textures are too chunky) The story and characters are irrelevant Performance is inconsistent | Interesting objectives. Unfortunately, the GameCube port got butchered.
NFL Blitz 2002 | A | 2002-03-18 | Fast-paced arcade gameplay Crazy over-the-top animations Hilarious commentary | No custom teams or players | I wish more football games were like this.
Bloody Roar: Primal Fury | A | 2002-03-19 | Plenty of characters to choose from High skill ceiling Fun and challenging arcade mode Decent training mode Good music | No vs. matches against CPUs Very difficult if you aren't a fighting gamer | I'm awful at fighting games, but this game taught me to use training mode and get better.
Home Run King | F | 2002-03-19 | Can create custom players Can freely organize team rosters | No Custom teams Terrible graphics and animations Noticeable glitches and gameplay flaws | Play All-Star Baseball instead.
NBA 2K2 | B | 2002-03-19 | Can create custom players and teams Can freely organize team rosters Good graphics Good stadium atmosphere | Cannot use custom teams in franchises Very little audio feedback from shots made Franchise mode has very little depth The included Street mode is not good | Decent basketball game. Lots of features. If you want a less serious game, play NBA Street. But this is the best "realistic" basketball game I've played so far.
Sega Soccer Slam | C | 2002-03-19 | Interesting character designs Doesn't take itself too seriously | Gameplay gets old fast | This one's pretty forgettable.
Donald Duck: Goin' Quackers Donald Duck: Quack Attack (PAL) | D | 2002-03-26 | Donald Duck is hilarious Gameplay is easy to understand | The graphics aren't great This game is extremely easy | Fine for a kid's game. But it doesn't do anything that interesting.
Driven | D | 2002-03-26 | Awesome music | Controls are slightly delayed Lots of bumps in the road causing spinouts Very few tracks Bad voice acting | A very average racing game with, like, 7 tracks.
ESPN MLS ExtraTime 2002 | C | 2002-04-02 | Faster gameplay than FIFA Can create custom teams and players | Graphics are worse than FIFA Movement is a little stiff Fewer teams than FIFA with no real players | It's like FIFA, but not as good. Only has USA soccer teams + international country teams
Spider-Man | C | 2002-04-16 | Lots of secrets and special moves to unlock Combat is fun once you unlock cool moves Spider-Man's one-liners are hilarious Lots of fun cheat codes and unlockables | Camera controls are wack Web swinging isn't as fun as it should be Air combat isn't very interesting Huge difficulty spike Cheesy voice acting | I used to love this game, but it hasn't held up well.
2002 FIFA World Cup | D | 2002-04-30 | Lots of gameplay options in the menus | No custom teams or players No regional teams (national teams only) No franchises or custom tournaments | It's like FIFA if you took out half the features and most of the teams. It's literally just the 2002 World Cup, which you can also play in FIFA if you wanted to.
Burnout | A | 2002-04-30 | Super smooth controls Great music High skill ceiling Rewards aggressive driving | Races are extremely long Championships are too easy | Fantastic racing game, but could have used a little more content.
Resident Evil | S | 2002-04-30 | Great atmosphere Great puzzles Exploration is fun Great story Lots of replay value | Controls take some getting used to Very little inventory space Text has lots of typos | My first time playing through a RE game. Absolutely phenominal. I totally understand how this became a huge franchise.
Virtua Striker 2002 Virtua Striker 3 ver. 2002JP/ (PAL) | C | 2002-05-20 | Team management is interesting The music is great Can create custom players | The soccer gameplay is clunky Cannot create custom teams The game crashes occasionally | The gameplay is terrible, but the team management is oddly fun. It's very Japanese in a way I can't quite explain.
Legends of Wrestling | F | 2002-05-28 | Can create custom wrestlers | Terrible gameplay Clunky animations Awkward controls | Absolutely dreadful.
Lost Kingdoms | B | 2002-05-29 | Great atmosphere Interesting card mechanics Can create and customize multiple decks | Cannot revisit levels you've already cleared There is a gigantic difficulty spike Battle music gets repetitive | Good potential, but needs more balancing. Also, the last level is horrible.
ZooCube | F | 2002-05-30 | Decent idea for a puzzle game | Too simple with very little depth Takes ages to get difficult Bad graphics and forgettable music | Interesting idea, but didn't need to be on GameCube. I would expect to get this kind of game in a cereal box.
Bomberman Generation | C | 2002-06-04 | Good graphics Fun puzzles in worlds 2 and 3 Enemy and Boss designs are cool Fantastic multiplayer mode | Absolutely insane boss fights Levels are too long with no checkpoints Death is extremely punishing Some required items can be difficult to find | Some things about this game are great, and some are absolutely terrible. They could have made a much better 3D Bomberman game than this. Great multiplayer, though.
WWE WrestleMania X8 | D | 2002-06-10 | Tons of wrestlers to choose from Good character creator Plenty of match types to choose from | Combat is pretty clunky Single-player modes aren't all that great | A little better than Legends of Wrestling. But that's not saying much.
Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem | A | 2002-06-24 | Great atmosphere Good Story Good Replay Value The Sanity Mechanic is fun | Unskippable Cutscenes (on first playthrough) Some puzzles are complete nonsense | Really unique game, but some puzzles are bonkers. Don't feel bad about looking up some puzzle solutions.
F1 2002 | B | 2002-06-24 | Decent Driving controls Plenty of tracks Weather, fuel, tires, etc. affect driving | No Time Trial Ghosts Grand Prix doesn't penalize off-track driving Should have had a better career mode No music during races | Grand Prix is kind of boring, but the challenge mode is actually pretty fun.
RedCard 2003 RedCard (PAL) | C | 2002-06-25 | Arcade-style gameplay Doesn't take itself too seriously | Team/Player customization is very limited Commentary is extremely repetitive | Should have been more like NFL Blitz or NHL Hitz. The gameplay is too much like normal Soccer.
Tetris Worlds | C | 2002-06-26 | Great music Tetris is fun as always Multiple variants of Tetris included | Pieces rotate multiple times while holding B or X Colors are muted and have low contrast Piece lock-in delay makes Tetris too easy Harder to play with GameCube stick/d-pad | Mediocre for a Tetris game, but Mediocre Tetris is still fun.
MX Superfly | B | 2002-06-27 | The Freestyle mode is really fun Lots of game modes to choose from Secrets and Easter Eggs galore | Double/Triple tap combos are too precise Controls have a bit of a learning curve The racing mode isn't fun | The races aren't great, but high scores are fun to go for.
NCAA Football 2003 | B | 2002-07-22 | Can create custom teams and players Very In-Depth team/stadium customization Includes lots of FCS Teams (Division I-AA) | Dynasty Mode takes over 200 blocks to save Games can take a long time to play Player appearances aren't very customizable | Don't count this one out because it's football. This game's actually solid.
UFC: Throwdown | F | 2002-07-30 | Can be beaten in under an hour | Career mode is just 30 exhibition matches Win every fight by spamming quick jabs Fights are eerily silent except for punch sounds | You can beat every opponent by spamming quick jabs. Your animation is faster than theirs, and they can't prevent it. Just don't get grabbed.
Aggressive Inline | A | 2002-08-01 | Fast-paced arcade-style gameplay Good trick combo system interesting and unique levels Playing later stages unlocks content in earlier levels | Good soundtrack, but gets a little repetitive | Tony Hawk, but inline skating. This one's worth checking out.
Smuggler's Run: Warzones | B | 2002-08-07 | Driving controls are good Fun objectives The levels with CPU teammates are really fun | Not much variety, gets repetitive The story is mediocre | Has potential as a great multiplayer game, but it gets a little repetitive.
Madden NFL 2003 | B | 2002-08-12 | Team/Player customization is improved over 2002 Lots of gameplay settings Solid gameplay for a football game | Customization is still not where it should be No reason to play this over future titles | Has more features, but gameplay is basically identical to 2002.
NFL Blitz 2003 | A | 2002-08-12 | Fast-paced arcade gameplay Crazy over-the-top animations Hilarious commentary | No custom teams Not much different than its predecessor | Less different to its predecessor than Madden.
Disney's Magical Mirror Starring Mickey Mouse | D | 2002-08-13 | Graphics are colorful and have aged well Point-and-click gameplay is easy for kids to play | Gameplay gets repetitive at times Very little replay value | Fine for a kid's game. Definitely a unique game for the system.
Beach Spikers: Virtua Beach Volleyball | B | 2002-08-14 | Solid gameplay Tournament mode is great The teammate system is really interesting | Not much to do when your teammate is maxed out The teamwork % system is too easy to figure out Camera rotation can make positioning harder | The single-player mode is actually pretty good. Working with your teammate and leveling her up is really engaging.
NFL 2K3 | C | 2002-08-20 | Can create custom teams and players Good franchise mode with team management | Play calling with the cursor is a little annoying Cannot change custom team colors from presets Graphics are worse than Madden 2003 | There's obviously something I'm missing with this game, but I don't see much reason to play this over Madden.
Super Mario Sunshine | B | 2002-08-26 | Good controls, fun movement Some levels are fun and very memorable Graphics are colorful and have aged well The secrets (non-fludd areas) are really fun | Overworld shines & blue coins are pointless Has only 7 levels (Super Mario 64 had 15) Level themes aren't varied enough (all tropical) Long, unskippable cutscenes with bad voice acting Some levels are the opposite of fun and memorable | Fun game, but only checking that you've defeated Shadow Mario in each world was a huge mistake. It means episodes 7 & 8, the 100-coin shine, overworld shines, and blue coins are pointless. Also has half the content of Super Mario 64 and less variety in its level themes. Fludd movement carries this game.
Super Monkey Ball 2 | S | 2002-08-26 | The story mode is really fun Challenge mode plays just like the first game Lots of fun mini games Controls are buttery smooth | A few levels are guessing games, which are trivial once you know the solution. | It's like Super Monkey Ball 1 with even more content.
Turok: Evolution | B | 2002-09-01 | Lots of content Flying levels break up the gameplay and add variety The game is challenging but not too frustrating Decent follow-up to N64 Turok games | You sometimes lose weapons for no obvious reason Some rooms have extremely unintuitive ways to progress No weapon wheel like the previous Turok games The sky level is missing the skybox on GameCube | Seems rushed and unpolished, but I think a remaster of this game could be great if they fixed the glitches. It's got everything it needs, but some annoying things hold the game back.
NCAA College Football 2K3 | C | 2002-09-03 | Can create custom teams and players Good franchise mode with team management | Play calling with the cursor is a little annoying Cannot change custom team colors from presets Graphics are worse than NCAA Football 2003 | Same thing as NFL 2K3. Just play the EA Sports one instead.
Pac-Man Fever | D | 2002-09-03 | Has characters from various Bandai/Namco games | Only 3 boards to choose from Mini-games should have been inspired by old Namco games Subpar graphics, animations, sound, music, etc. | Shovelware Mario Party. Imagine if one of the 1v3 minigames was basically pac-man, where the 3 players control the ghosts? Or a 4p minigame that's basically Rally X? They could have done so much more with this.
Freekstyle | A | 2002-09-04 | Driving is satisfying Tricks are fun to pull off Lots of shortcuts to discover | Circuit mode requires beating each track 3 times to progress | I honestly liked this better than SSX Tricky. The driving is fun, there are tons of shortcuts, and most of the maps are great. I don't like having to beat races 3 times to progress, but it's still fun.
MLB Slugfest 2003 | B | 2002-09-04 | Hilarious commentary | |
The Scorpion King: Rise of the Akkadian | D | 2002-09-10 | Good graphics for the time Combat system is okay minus some balance issues | Repetitive gameplay Bad boss fights | This game had everything it needed to be fine, but it needed more time in the oven and more things to do besides fighting people. Probably wasn't worth the effort when the movie bombed.
Ty the Tasmanian Tiger | A | 2002-09-10 | Good gameplay Lots of freedom to play the levels you want Plenty of fun levels to explore | Controls aren't great Not many movement options The camera is too close to Ty The boss fights aren't great | Surprisingly underrated. Controls are rough and movement isn't amazing, but I love the freedom the game gives you.
Egg Mania: Eggstreme Madness Eggo Mania (PAL) | C | 2002-09-11 | Fun, addicting gameplay Lots of gameplay options in multiplayer | Lots of randomness in the single-player mode | Fun for a while, but the animal randomness gets annoying on higher difficulties. Turn it off in MP if you want to have more fun.
Scooby-Doo! Night of 100 Frights | B | 2002-09-12 | Exploring the game world is really fun Controls are good Scooby-Doo is hilarious | Cutscene animations aren't great Sound quality is noticeable bad | A metroidvania for kids. Much better than most cartoon games I've played so far.
Big Air Freestyle | D | 2002-09-13 | Challenge Mode is pretty good | Bad graphics Weird physics | Graphics look like a PS1 game, but the gameplay is alright. The high jumps are hard to figure out.
Animal Crossing | S | 2002-09-16 | Uses real-world date/time for in-game events New things happen each day The game is calm and relaxing | Inventory navigation is slow and somewhat tedious | This is one of the most charming games on the system. I can't describe it any other way.
NHL Hitz 2003 | S | 2002-09-16 | Fast-paced arcade-style gameplay Can create custom teams and players Crazy over-the-top animations Graphics are better than the previous entry | In career, you can only upgrade your whole team vs. individual players like 2002. The mini games are pretty boring | This game has a much bigger career mode than 2002, but I wish they would have kept the per-player upgrades like that game had. In this game, you can only upgrade your entire team, which I think takes away from the team management a little. Equipment upgrades makes up for it, I guess. I think this one is technically superior to 2002, though.
Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex | B | 2002-09-17 | Fun, challenging levels Time Trials are fun Great soundtrack | Lots of graphics and sound glitches Annoying boss fights Flight levels are not fun | Blends 2D and 3D platforming together pretty well. The flight levels and boss fights are really annoying, but most of the rest of the game is decent. The GameCube version has a lot of graphical and audio issues, though.
Kelly Slater's Pro Surfer | D | 2002-09-17 | Interesting scoring system The documentaries are cool | Different levels have very little variety Graphics are really bad Not much content aside from score challenges | My biggest issue with this game is that there's no variety in the levels. I mean, the entire game takes place in ocean waves, so there's not much to work with. I like the scoring system, though. It takes some time to learn, but it adds some depth to the game
NASCAR Thunder 2003 | B | 2002-09-18 | Driving controls are good Lots of tracks Can create custom cars | Most of the game is just driving in circles | For what it is, NASCAR Thunder 2003 is a very well-made game. The controls are good, and it's got most of what you'd expect a NASCAR game to have. My main gripe is with the sport itself. I just wish the tracks were more interesting.
Monsters, Inc. Scream Arena | F | 2002-09-19 | Pretty hectic with 4 players | Very little content | There's not much to say about this one. It's a dodgeball minigame with Monsters, Inc. characters. You can watch 2 minutes of gameplay and see everything this game has to offer. Take the 2 hours you'd spend beating this game and watch the movie instead.
Star Fox Adventures | C | 2002-09-23 | It's fun to explore most of the world Good puzzle solving Great graphics Great music | The story is poorly written Lots of pointless backtracking Half of the game feels like filler Lots of annoying design issues | The first two hours of this game is honestly pretty great. The graphics are fantastic and still hold up well, the music is better than it has any right to be, and the story was really interesting. However, the writing progressively gets worse and worse as the game goes on, and the gameplay devolves into pointless backtracking and fetch quests. It turns a potentially decent 10-hour game into a slightly annoying 17-hour game. I also didn't like the way they handled General Scales at the end of the game, but I won't spoil it in case you haven't played it. Overall, this game could have been fantastic is Rare was allowed to keep this game Dinosaur Planet, but I blame Nintendo for turning this into a Star Fox game and forcing Rare to stitch together a weird story to make it make sense.
4x4 Evo 2 | F | 2002-09-24 | You can drive freely in massive levels (freeroam) The game has real-world car brands | The racing is extremely barebones The graphics are really bland Some missions are really annoying | The racing in this game is probably the most barebones I've seen so far. The missions are alright, though. Some of them are annoying, but I guess they're okay. The highlight of this game should be exploring the massive levels, but the maps aren't interesting or different enough from each other to carry this game. This game is basically a worse version of Smuggler's Run.
Capcom vs. SNK 2 EO | A | 2002-09-24 | Deep, rich gameplay High skill ceiling Tons of characters to choose from | The GameCube controller isn't good for 2D Fighters | GameCube controllers kind of suck for 2D fighting games, but this game is still really fun. It makes me want to get good at a modern Street Fighter game. There's not much single-player content, but that's par for the course as far as fighting games go.
Rocket Power: Beach Bandits | D | 2002-09-24 | The skate park design is faithful to the show Decent amount of variety in its gameplay | Much longer than it needed to be Skating controls are a little awkward More loading screens than you can count | It's probably been 20 years since I've watched Rocket Power, but this game made me remember a lot from the show. The game itself is okay, I guess. It's just a few hours longer than it needed to be.
WTA Tour Tennis Pro Tennis WTA Tour (PAL) | F | 2002-09-24 | Features real tennis players and tournaments | Repetitive gameplay with very little content Stiff animations Very few features | You can play this game for 10 minutes and get everything this game has to offer. If you decide to play more than that, the career mode has dozens of tournaments where each match takes about as long as a real life professional tennis match. However, it's extremely barebones and doesn't offer any content besides mediocre tennis gameplay.
Mystic Heroes | D | 2002-09-30 | The combat is decent once you figure it out The rune system is interesting Has a co-op campaign | Some levels are very poorly designed Bad voice acting The camera is awkward and has a low field of view Difficulty is off the charts | Mystic Heroes is essentially Dynasty Warriors on GameCube. You get into these large-scale fantasy battles and kill the enemies with your melee attacks and magic abilities. It took me a while to "get" the combat, but it's honestly alright. I thought the runes made setting up my character a little more interesting, too. That being said, it's hard to ignore that the gameplay gets pretty repetitive at times, and the camera makes things more annoying than they need to be. This game's difficulty is out of control because a lot of the levels (especially some boss fights) are designed like a bad Mario Maker level. Overall, this game could be okay with some design changes, but I wouldn't recommend it.
Mary-Kate and Ashley: Sweet 16 – Licensed to Drive | F | 2002-10-01 | Gameplay is alright for what it is | Very few mini games Takes forever to play | This game is basically a budget version of Mario Party, but I won't be too harsh on it since it's clearly designed for little girls. Honestly, the mini games are okay. They'd be on par with Mario Party if they had a 45-second timer instead of 1:30 or 2 minutes. You also only get two boards to play on. My main issue with the game is that it takes forever to play if you don't change the settings. This game could have been alright if it had more content and didn't feature Mary Kate and Ashley.
Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2 | B | 2002-10-01 | Has real car brands Good graphics and sound Fun missions Police radio is fun and interactive | Horrible input lag Some races are way too long The cops can be annoying at times | A decent racing game with terrible input lag. It takes what should be a fantastic game and makes me not want to play it anymore. The graphics and sound are good, the missions are fun, the cops are very interactive, and the cars are all really nice, but the controls are sluggish and slow. It makes it hard to correct your mistakes or avoid collisions when every reaction is delayed by 3/4 of a second. I also think the police cars are really random and annoying when they gang up on you and ignore the other racers, but that's only a minor gripe compared to the controls.
Rayman Arena | B | 2002-10-01 | The race mode is really fun Great level design | The battle mode is pretty bad Forced to play baby easy races to unlock harder ones Not much content | A surprisingly fun game. It's like a cross between Crash Bandicoot and 3D Sonic turned into a racing game. I could see this one being pretty fun with friends. My main gripe with the race mode is that you're forced to play the beginner races before the pro ones are available. It's kind of like playing 50cc in mario kart to unlock 100cc and 150cc. Just let me play the normal speed races from the start! Other than that and the battle mode, this one's pretty solid.
NHL 2003 | B | 2002-10-03 | Fast-paced gameplay Can create custom teams and players The commentators are pretty funny | Single-player mode isn't as interesting as NHL Hitz | This game does basically the same thing most other semi-realistic sports games do. The game is fine, but it doesn't go above-and-beyond with anything. It's about what you'd expect from a decent hockey game. I prefer the arcade-style sports games like NHL Hitz.
NBA 2K3 | B | 2002-10-07 | Better team and player customization than 2K2 Can freely organize team rosters Good graphics Fixes some issues I had with the previous game | Menus are confusing to navigate | NBA 2K3 actually improves a lot from the previous game. The customization and sounds are noticeably better this time around. My only major complaint is that I think the menus are annoying to navigate. There are so many weird sub-menus, and it's not always obvious where a specific setting might be. Other than that, this one's pretty good.
Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee | D | 2002-10-08 | Has a 4-player vs. mode | Very little content Slow combat with no way to perform combos | As a fighting game, this game is pretty awful. But as a 4-player game where you knock down buildings and make giant monsters hit each other, I could see it being okay for a while.
Mat Hoffman's Pro BMX 2 | C | 2002-10-08 | Courses are interesting and have a lot of variety Decent soundtrack | Controls are pretty bad Framerate is low There is no trick list in the game's menus Some challenge descriptions are really vague | This is another potentially good game ruined by bad controls and subpar framerates. The courses are all interesting and the challenges are pretty good, too, but the controls make this game way more of a chore than it should be. To do a manual, you have to press up then down (or down, then up) exactly. You can't get anywhere close to a diagonal or else it won't work. Also, you have to wait until your current trick animation is over before the game will accept those manual inputs. It just makes the controls feel really clunky, in my opinion. It was clearly designed with the PS2 D-pad in mind, not the GameCube d-pad or its analog stick.
NBA Live 2003 | C | 2002-10-08 | Smooth gameplay | Doesn't offer much over other basketball games Cannot create custom teams | This is exactly what you'd expect from a basketball game from the time. It doesn't do anything very wrong, but it also doesn't do anything that puts it above the other basketball games I've played up to this point.
Taz: Wanted | C | 2002-10-08 | Good movement mechanics Hub worlds are nice and levels are open-ended | Jank. Jank everywhere. Levels design is confusing at times Audio quality is terrible | This is a decent little platform game with surprisingly good movement mechanics. Sadly, the audio quality is horrendous, and some levels can be pretty confusing at times. It's cool that they're non-linear, but they needed to be designed a little better. Still, this one's alright. I'd say it's a step above some of the other cartoon games I've played up to this point.
Knockout Kings 2003 | B | 2002-10-09 | Decent career mode Has lots of real boxers, including Muhammad Ali | Controls take some getting used to Character creation is somewhat limited | It's not the greatest 3D fighting game I've played, but I enjoyed it. The controls take some getting used to and the camera is kind of annoying when it moves around too much, but this game has most of what you'd expect from a decent boxing game for the time. In the career mode, you create a custom character and fight your way to the championship title. What's funny is that if you take too long, your character's stats go down due to age, so it becomes unwinnable after a certain point.
Namco Museum | C | 2002-10-09 | Decent collection of fun arcade games | Most games are not the arcade originals The GameCube controller isn't good for 2D arcade games | I had this game as a kid and remember it being pretty cool for the time, but these kinds of games are pointless nowadays. I won't hold that against it, but this game doesn't offer much besides the ability to play namco classics, although they aren't the arcade originals. Ms. Pac-Man plays noticeably worse than its arcade version, in my opinion.
Backyard Football | C | 2002-10-10 | Has real NFL teams and players Graphics are nice and colorful Doesn't take itself too seriously | Gameplay gets kind of repetitive The game is too easy | Blue 42! Yellow Dog!! Set... Hike! I remember these games being pretty popular back in the day, and I can see why. It's a fun little football game that doesn't take itself too seriously. However, it does get a little repetitive after an hour or two of playing. It's also really easy, which I can understand since this is a game for little kids.
Casper: Spirit Dimensions | D | 2002-10-14 | The game is pretty short The music is good | Controls are awkward Sound effects are extremely low quality Levels and objectives are not very interesting | There's not much to say about this one. It's not the worst game I've played, but it's hard to find anything very positive to say about it. The controls are bad, the graphics are pretty mediocre, and the sound quality is terrible. The levels are okay, I guess, and the music is pretty good.
TimeSplitters 2 | S | 2002-10-15 | Fun campaign with lots of variety in its levels Campaign can be played in co-op Multiplayer has tons of maps, characters, and modes Includes a really fun challenge mode Can create custom levels and multiplayer maps | Aim sensitivity is too high with no way to adjust it The story is nothing to write home about There's a huge difficulty spike in the 2nd-to-last level | TimeSplitters 2 has more content than most first-person shooters that came out even years after it. The campaign is fun and very reminiscent of GoldenEye and Perfect Dark, and it can be played solo or with a friend. The multiplayer mode is also one of the best on the GameCube, with tons of maps, characters, and game modes you can select. Plus, you can play with or against bots. There's also a challenge mode which will really put you to the test. If that wasn't enough, you can also create custom maps for the campaign and multiplayer. I don't think another first-person shooter would have this much content (aside from its sequel, TimeSplitters: Future Perfect) until Halo 3.
Robotech: Battlecry | D | 2002-10-16 | Air combat is pretty fun The story is alright | The sound quality is pretty bad The tank controls are awkward Difficulty is all over the place Lots of missions are very poorly designed | This is an anime mech game where you can transform your mech into a soldier, a tank, or a fighter jet. The concept is fine and the story is okay, but the way the missions are designed kills the fun for me. There are way too many levels where you have to defend a useless teammate that tries as hard as they can to get themselves killed. There are also some massive difficulty spikes, which makes the game even less fun. Overall, this game has what it needs to be a solid C-tier game, but the poor level design really holds it back for me.
Mario Party 4 | A | 2002-10-21 | Lots of fun mini games Tons of replay value | Boards are pretty flat compared to later games | I didn't have any experience with this Mario Party game before playing it, but I think it's really fun. I'll have to play 5 again to see how it compares, but none are as good as 6! My only real complaint about this game is that the boards are flat and are mostly rectangular hallways. I get that it's like a real board game, but I prefer the more unique board designs from the later games. Still, this game has just about everything you'd want from a good Mario Party game, so I'd recommend it.
X-Men: Next Dimension | C | 2002-10-22 | Decent fighting game with lots of combo potential | Sentinel fights are annoying The AI cheats to win fights | The single-player mode for this game is kind of annoying, but I could see it being pretty good as a multiplayer game. I'm not great at fighting games, so it's a little hard for me to rate these, but I thought it was decent. Cyclops and Phoenix are OP.
Swingerz Golf Ace Golf (PAL) | B | 2002-10-23 | Graphics are simple and have aged well Gameplay is surprisingly deep Career Mode is fun to progress through The music is great | The golf ball doesn't land where the cursor is There's a huge difficulty spike halfway through the career | There's just something about the way this game looks that makes me happy. It just has that perfect early 2000's 3D art style that's simple and has aged really well. It almost feels like a Sega game in that way. The gameplay is a lot like Mario Golf, but less crazy. My main gripe with the game is that it's hard to predict where the ball will land, since the cursor doesn't show that. As far as I know, there's no way to change it. There's also a huge difficulty spike halfway through the career, so you really gotta know your stuff to make it to the end. Overall, this game is honestly pretty good for what it is. I just wish it wasn't called "Swingerz Golf."
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4 | S | 2002-10-23 | Fast-paced arcade-style gameplay Perfect trick combo system Tons of interesting levels Freedom to do missions you want Good soundtrack Doesn't take itself too seriously | Can be tough on your hands Analog stick/GameCube D-pad makes tricks harder | Pro Skater 4 changes the mission format from Pro Skater 3, but I think it's for the best. You can freely skate in each level without a time limit, then select the goals you want to try. This game has just about everything that made Pro Skater 3 great, but with even more content.
Worms Blast | F | 2002-10-24 | Good music | Bizzarely difficult and unfair Random nonsense makes completing some levels a pain Looks like an early 2000s flash game | This game would be fine if it wasn't designed to be as unfair and annoying as possible. There's no reason a puzzle game should require the level of precision this game expects. I wish they would have ported Worms: Armageddon instead.
Top Gun: Combat Zones | C | 2002-10-28 | Good music Air combat is pretty fun Controls are good | Graphics are not great Has very little relation to the movie Most missions are just "eliminate these stationary targets" | This feels like a last-gen game that released a few years too late, but it's fine for what it is. This is a Top Gun game in name only.
Star Wars: The Clone Wars | C | 2002-10-29 | Gameplay is fine for the most part | Controls for some vehicles are awkward Cannot play multiplayer with bots | The single-player mode is nothing special, but I hear the multiplayer is really good. I just wish I could play it against bots. For now, I have to go by the videos of it I've seen and other people's opinions on it. Aside from that, this game doesn't do much to stand out besides being a Star Wars game. Personally, I prefer Rogue Squadron II.
Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2003 | A | 2002-10-29 | Has tons of famous golf courses Lots of single-player content | Graphics are not great and the colors are washed out Putting is pretty awkward | There's a lot to like about PGA Tour 2003. The Tiger challenge is fun, it's got a lot of scenarios you can play through, and there's some good multiplayer content. Plus, there are tons of famous golf courses you can play on. The game isn't perfect, but it's the best GameCube golf game of its time. My only two complaints are that the graphics are not anything to write home about, and putting can feel awkward at times.
Outlaw Golf | C | 2002-10-30 | The commentary is done by Steve Carell Doesn't take itself seriously in the slightest | Only 3 courses in the entire game?! Courses are not well designed Slower-paced than other golf games from the time | This is one of those sports games that does what it can to make it more "extreme" than other games from the time. Instead of playing as rich, well-dressed golfers, you play as a cast of criminals and social misfits that give the game this edgy early 2000s humor you don't see much anymore. They also somehow got Steve Carell to do the commentary, and he's as hilarious as always. But this game's biggest flaw is its selection of courses. First, there are only 3 to choose from, which is a big step down from Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2003 or even Swingerz Golf (a.k.a. 'Ace Golf'), which also had a similarly low budget. The courses are also not very well designed, with huge obstacles being placed in the most inconvenient spots possible. In theory, this game is fine, but you're better off playing just about any other golf game on GameCube.
Phantasy Star Online Episode I & II | A | 2002-10-30 | Online play! The story is interesting Tons of single-player and online content | Some maps are huge, clearly designed for massive raids Gameplay can get repetitive | Phantasy Star Online is a really impressive GameCube game, because it's basically the only true online experience you're going to have on the system. I played this solo, but the online community seems really active, so I'll have to dive into that for Episode 3. Anyway, the gameplay is pretty decent for this style of game, but it's obvious it was designed to be played in large groups. As a solo player, some of the maps took way too long to get through. Otherwise, I'd recommend this one, especially if you play online.
Shrek: Extra Large | D | 2002-10-30 | Good movement mechanics | Has nothing to do with any Shrek movies No dialog from Shrek, and Donkey isn't even in the game Feels very unfinished Bad graphics | This is your typical shovelware game from the early 2000s. I'd say the one thing this game has going for it is that the movement mechanics are actually pretty good. You can sprint, walljump, body slam, boost off explosions, things like that. Just watch a speedrun and you'll see the crazy stunts they can pull off. But for casual players, this game's biggest draw is that it's so absurd you can't help but laugh at it. Unfortunately, the actual gameplay isn't great, and it gets old after a while.
BloodRayne | A | 2002-10-31 | Good story Fun combat Good graphics | Controls and movement can be awkward at times One of the boss fights is really annoying | This game starts off slow, but it gets really fun after the first level. It's fast-paced and doesn't take itself too seriously. I also found myself pretty engaged in the story. The graphics are also great compared to most of the games I've played up to this point. My only real complaint about this game is that the controls can be a little awkward at times, mainly when you're sprinting through tight corridors. Still, this one's definitely worth playing.
Defender Defender: For All Mankind (PAL) | C | 2002-11-04 | Combat is decent The story is alright | Controls take some getting used to Gets repetitive | I don't have much to say about this one. The original Defender is a classic arcade game, and this game does what you'd expect from a modern-ish reimagining of it. The air combat is fine and the story is serviceable, but the gameplay gets old too quickly. It's very similar to Top Gun: Combat Zones, but a little better.
Cubivore: Survival of the Fittest | A | 2002-11-05 | Unlike anything else on GameCube Good art style | Bad camera | I have no idea how I would describe this game. You get born, eat, fight monsters, mutate, mate, and multiply until you return the animal kingdom back to its wild self. If that doesn't make you want to play the game, I don't know what will.
Whirl Tour | C | 2002-11-05 | The levels all have interesting themes Has 2-player co-op | Gameplay is slow Poor performance | Whirl Tour has some interesting ideas going for it, but it doesn't give you much reason to play it over the multitude of other extreme sports games from the time. The most unique thing about it is that you can play the story mode in co-op. Overall, this one's not terrible, but I wouldn't recommend it.
Zapper: One Wicked Cricket | B | 2002-11-06 | Levels have a lot of variety Gameplay is simple and intuitive Arcade mode with time trial ghosts | Very short | This is essentially a frogger clone, but it's actually pretty fun. There's a lot of variety in the single-player mode, and the arcade mode has time trials. My only real complaint is that the game is really short - under two hours, unless you go for 100%, which would probably add another hour or so. That could be for the best, though. I don't see a puzzle game with grid movement having much replay value.
Medal of Honor: Frontline | A | 2002-11-07 | Great setpieces Lots of variety Great music | You cannot change the camera sensitivity Very inconsistent framerate The subtitles don't show what English speakers are saying | Frontline is the first Medal of Honor game on GameCube, and it's an all-time classic. There are epic setpieces, especially near the start of the game, lots of variety in the type of levels you play, and the music is fantastic. However, it does have some flaws. I think my biggest complaint is that aiming is kind of hard at times, and you can't adjust the camera sensitivity, either. The horizontal sensitivity is mostly fine, but the vertical sensitivity is too high. Also, I appreciate that the game targets 60fps, but it very rarely gets there, so it makes the game feel jittery when the framerate is constantly fluctuating. Something else I noticed is that the subtitle option only affects non-english dialog. I guess they thought you wouldn't need subtitles when they're speaking English. It was more annoying in this game because you're often told what to do through dialog, which is easy to miss due to loud background noise. Overall, this is still a great game, especially for the time, but it does have some issues.
Pro Rally | C | 2002-11-11 | Lots of tracks | Bad graphics CPU drivers are annoying Races are too easy | If you ignore the fact that the graphics were very dated even for its time, Pro Rally is a very "okay" game. It starts off with a tutorial sequence that's less forgiving than it has any right to be, but immediately becomes too easy once the actual game starts. There are four game modes: Time Trials, Arcade, Trophy, and the Championship. The Championship mode is the main part of the game, but you don't even race against CPU drivers there. Instead, your score is your total time on each track in solo races. Assuming you don't flip over, you'll find that you'll dominate the CPU times on anything besides the hardest tracks on the hardest difficulty. You can race against CPUs in the Arcade mode, but they're incredibly annoying. Car collision is not realistic, so the slightest touch will bring you to a screeching halt or launch you off the track.
Darkened Skye | A | 2002-11-12 | Hilarious cutscenes Lots of variety Good puzzles (for the most part) Has quicksaves like a PC game | Jank. Jank everywhere. A few puzzles are unintuitive | Darkened Skye is a Skittles game. Yes, it's an Adventure game based on the candy. You would expect a game licensed by a candy company to be on par with a cereal box game, but it's honestly pretty good for what it is. It's full of hilarious tongue-in-cheek jokes and is completely aware of how ridiculous the plot is. The gameplay, on the other hand, is fine enough for what it is. The closest thing I can compare it to is Star Fox Adventures, but I think it's better than that. The only other downside is that sometimes the game feels like it's being held together by duct tape and hot glue, as if you could just fall through the map at any time. But hey, Sonic Adventure 2 feels like that all the time, and it's one of my favorite games on the system. This game is so jank, but it's jank in just the right way.
Disney Sports Skateboarding | D | 2002-11-12 | Awkward Controls Annoying announcer and sound effects Bad level design | I honestly have very little to say about this game. It's just a mediocre extreme sports game with a handful of weird levels with basic goals. It's obviously designed for kids, so I won't be too harsh on it, but this doesn't offer anything over the multitude of other extreme sports games from the time. |
Disney Sports Soccer Disney Sports: Football (PAL) | C | 2002-11-12 | Gameplay is simple and easy to understand | Some magic abilities are unstoppable Weirdly difficult after winning a few games | There isn't much to say about this one. It's a generic soccer game where you play as Mickey Mouse characters, except your team captain has a special ability they can use every now and then. Most of these magic abilities are simple things like a super-powered kick, or a tackle move that knocks out a nearby player, but some of them are really overpowered when the CPUs get to spam them. If you want to stay sane, turn off the magic abilities before creating your save file, because you can't change the option once you've already started.
NASCAR: Dirt to Daytona | B | 2002-11-12 | Good career mode Smooth driving controls Four different leagues to race in | Almost all tracks are ovals No time trials No music during races | Dirt to Daytona has most of what you'd want in a career mode in a racing game. You can upgrade and tune your cars exactly how you want, manage your employees (pit crew, car tuners, etc.), and customize your car's appearance and sponsors. You start out in the dirt league, where you race low-end cars, then you move up to more prestigious racing leagues until you ultimately become a true NASCAR driver. You also earn money by doing well in races and getting new sponsors, which you use to upgrade your cars. It has a satisfying snowball effect where you keep spending money to make more money later. My only real complaint about the game is that it's being held back by the sport itself, because the vast majority of NASCAR tracks are ovals. Sure, each one plays differently, but it would have been nice to have some more interesting tracks.
Resident Evil Zero | A | 2002-11-12 | Great atmosphere Great puzzles Exploration is fun Having two characters is really nice | Controls take some getting used to Very little inventory space No item box to store leftover items in | Resident Evil Zero plays similarly to the first game, with one major difference: There are two characters you can control at the same time. Usually, one character just follows the other and helps you fight Zombies, but you will occasionally need to switch between them to solve puzzles that require both characters to work together. Each character also has their own inventory, which helps a lot because you don't get much space to work with. You'll often have to leave important items behind because you can't spare the inventory space until you know exactly what you're supposed to do them. At times, it can feel like there's a lot of backtracking, but at least the map shows where all the items you've left behind are. Speaking of, unlike the first game, there is no convenient place to leave all your leftover items. That means you just have to drop things on the floor in random rooms here and there, which you'll probably have to backtrack to later. Overall, it's still a fantastic game I'd recommend playing, but I just wish there were a few more inventory slots or an item box in the save room, like the first game.
Sonic Mega Collection | B | 2002-11-12 | Good selection of classic Genesis games Includes bonus content, original game manuals, etc. | GameCube controller sucks for 2D games Unlocking all the games is a huge pain | These retro game compilations are pretty obsolete these days, but for the time, Sonic Mega Collection was a good way to play the old classics. The main focus are the first three Sonic games on the Genesis (including Knuckles in Sonic 2), but it also has some other ones like Mean Bean Machine and Ristar. You can even play the Blue Spheres special mode from Sonic 3 as a standalone game, if you love it as much as I do. Anyway, it's hard to rate these compilation games fairly, but I think this one is pretty good, especially for the time.
FIFA Football 2003 FIFA Soccer 2003 (NA) | C | 2002-11-14 | Decent soccer simulation Contains teams from multiple leagues | Cannot create custom teams or players | I expected this to be exactly the same as FIFA 2002, but it's actually way worse. They completely removed the ability to create custom teams or players, and there isn't much to do between games when you're playing a full season. It just feels like you're setting up a bunch of exhibition matches. FIFA 2002 had more features, and I felt like there was a little more management involved in your team, especially if it was a custom one. You could even create your own leagues and put whatever teams you wanted in there together. That's all been removed from this game, though. The actual game of soccer is basically the same between the two games, so just play 2002 instead.
Hot Wheels: Velocity X | D | 2002-11-14 | Objectives in a driving game are interesting | The game feels thrown together on a low budget The cutscenes and voice acting are terrible | This is one of those games that's really hard to come up with anything to say for. It's just a bunch of levels with objectives that kind of make sense. The only saving grace is that the driving controls are fine, for the most part. I think they would have been better off making this a more cartoony Hot Wheels racing game with those orange track pieces and whatnot. They should have leaned more into it being a toy instead of whatever this is.
Rocky | C | 2002-11-14 | Has almost all the fights from the films The controls are better than a lot of Boxing games | The fights are simple once you know a few combos Doesn't have any music from the films except the theme song The cutscenes and voice acting are terrible | I didn't expect much from this game since it's a licensed movie tie-in that was released about 10 years too late, but this one's actually okay. The controls are decent, you can do different punches by pressing the face buttons in combination with the analog stick or R button, and it has basically everybody you care about from any of the Rocky movies, except Hulk Hogan's character from Rocky III. You can even unlock Mickey and the Rocky Statue, which is hilarious to see. However, while it has lots of characters and basically all the arenas from the films, it doesn't have any of the music except for the main Rocky theme. Instead, you get loads of generic songs that don't hit the same way as the songs they imitate. I would have also liked to see more content from the films that aren't boxing matches. They could have had a training montage set to Eye of the Tiger, or something like that. Lastly, the voice acting and cutscenes are just plain terrible. I don't expect a synopsis of every movie, but the story cutscenes it does have look very cheaply made, even for its time. Overall, Rocky is a decent boxing game that ties in to a classic film series, but I wouldn't say it's the best boxing game you could play on the GameCube.
